Does Facebook Replace Face Time or Enhance It?

What would life be like without technology? It would be difficult to travel very far, and would take much longer to make things. And can you image a world without telephones, televisions, or computers? Modern technology makes our lives easier and more enjoyable.

Nowadays we have the so-called Facebook. It is a social networking website and its users can create and customize their own profiles with photos, videos, and information about themselves. It has also the ability to add applications to your profile. There are also hundreds of video game applications that allow users to play small video games. Facebook provides an easy way for friends, family members who are working abroad to keep in touch and for individuals to have a presence on the web without needing to build a website.

Although Facebook is very beneficial to the society as I mentioned above, but it would be a bit destructive if children use it without proper guidance by parents. Devoting too much time on Facebook can cause bad effect on their studies and leads to poor physical health because they have no time for outdoor activities. Once they are addicted to such computer games, it is really hard to divide their times for some important activities. Also, some children might be a victim of fraud because this time some strangers are using internet and other forms of telecommunication to victimize innocent children. Not only for youths but also for adults who get into an intimate relationship through online dating, getting into a relationship with whom you don’t know in personal has more disadvantages. It might lead to a frustrating affair, and early broken-hearted. Generally speaking, Facebook is very useful to the society if you learn to use it properly. (289 words)

A Quiet Revolution Grows in the Muslim World
(http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1886539,00.html)
Since the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack on America, the July 7, 2005 London bombings, and the February, 2006 Denmark in the eye of the storm over Muslim Cartoon, these Muslim related events left an wide gap between Muslim and western countries. However, I think those actions cannot represent the whole Muslim world, but carried out by only some religious bigots. For giving those members of the post-9/11 generation a new self-confidence and a positive attitude, these strict Muslim should devote to turn away other people’s prejudice to them by some ways.

I have stayed in Boston, Massachusetts for months 9 years ago. Sometimes, I could see a couple (I think so) who lived nearby my apartment wearing the Islamic veil or hijab, but I don’t know how to approach them because their dress and their appearance made me felt that they are serious, mysterious, and isolated people. So, in my opinion it is better that the Muslim utilizes a soft and interesting way to adapt to the 21st century to let people understand their culture or belief. To a religious belief, I prefer to hear that“you could be a good Muslim and yet enjoy life,”or “ We focused on God’s mercy.”

I agree to the Egyptian’s dentist Nagar’s proposal that he called for dividing the religious and political wings of the movement, because I think if people blend this two, religion and politics, their role to a mosque or a state will confused. Finally, the media should give a break to Islam world—do not overstate the negative news about them, just trying to introduce the audience the new Muslim undergoing a soft revolution. (280 words)

India's ultracheap car arrives with load of uncertainties
(http://www.iht.com/articles/2009/03/22/business/nano.php)

To sell this new style mini car to the whole world is a big challenge for this automaker in India, a developing country. After finishing reading this article, my first concern is that is the car safe enough for drivers to drive? The joke-- if you hit a deer with the Nano, you have to ride the deer to work-- reveal consumers didn’t have sufficient confidence in this new ride. In other words, people will think that the benefit comes from a price one has paid, so maybe this low priced car has its limitations-- not safe enough or quickly fail to work correctly.

Tata motors should define the markets where they want to promote this tiny car. As we know, when people consider buying a new car, what they care are the safety, the comfort and the cost of the car. Therefore, the automakers should produce creditable rides for these customers if possible. However, a safe car would be wonderful, but the fact of the matter is that not all people can afford one; a big car could be more comfortable, but the gas we have could be exhausted someday. To produce this small, cheap, fuel-efficient vehicle is compatible with this time of economic and energy crisis. If people will use the car mostly for city driving or to commute to work or school, maybe this cute car could give them another choice.

To gain consumer’s faith on this car is a crucial factor for succeed. The carmakers must be very careful about the quality of the car. If automakers break the rule-- safe, they will not be trust by the crowd anymore. (274 words)

ADVERTISING
A Web Awash in Liquor Ads, Promoting Moderation

I got my first drunk in a year-end party held by my boss several years ago. I was surprised at that accident because I think I drank only some alcoholic drinks; I had no idea about how much alcohol that I had consumed was too much for me to get drunk. After reading this article, I think maybe that’s because I could not “recognize the moment” to stop drinking at that time.

I just get access to the website of Absolute’s and find some information, which let people know what is moderate level of drinking and how to drinking in a responsible way. I think those messages and skills are necessary for the consumers just like some instructions for medicine used. Once a merchant sell a product to buyers, he or she has the duty to let consumers know how to use (or to drink) in an appropriate way. From medical research, we know drink too much alcohol will harm the liver, brain, heart, and kidneys etc. In Taiwan, the government spent huge money on caring these cases. On the contrary, the alcohol sellers earn big money from selling the alcoholic drinks. Therefore, the major marketers of alcohol beverage held these campaigns for public are their duty. Besides, the campaign could be regarded as an advertisement for their companies. (219 words)

According to Some Hidden Choices in Breast Reconstruction, breast reconstruction is a surgery to rebuild a breast’s shape. For those women who get breast cancer undergoing mastectomies, the plastic surgeon perform the operation offering a result that looks like a breast can be a first step to establish their self-confidence. However, many reconstruction patients didn’t be informed by their doctor that there are some promising new operations they can choose for breast reconstruction. The doctors didn’t tell the patients about the new information because not all surgeons have trained to performed the procedures and the complicated surgeries are less profitable for doctors and hospitals.

Unfortunately, that kind of condition also existed in Taiwan. A lot of doctors don’t perform the new or complicated procedures for their patients. Besides the two factors mentioned above, another reasons are time and legal problems: the doctors are getting busier in their work since the national health insurance program was launched so that they have no time to learn or practice new surgery; the doctors also considered that if they failed in performing the operation, they would be sued by the patient or the patient's their families. We all know that the patients have the right to gain enough knowledge that they can choose what their options might be, but the doctors have their stand against it. It’s no use forcing the doctors to do what they should.

Governor should encourage the doctors to perform the new or complicated surgery by some ways. In my opinion, the doctors who perform new or complicated surgery should be encouraged by giving a higher pay or by offering a good position. Of course, the most important thing is that the doctors should always keep their declaration --they will practice their profession with conscience and dignity, the health of their patient will be their first consideration -- in their mind at the time of being admitted as a member of medical profession. According to the“10 years later, school still sugar free and proud, over the last 20 years, rate of obesity in children have risen greatly in many countries around the world. The health professionals consider unhealthy eating patterns and lack of physical activity play important roles in determining a kid’s weight. At Georgia, an elementary school removed soda and junk food from the vending machines and cafeterias, and designed some fitness classes for their students for a decade. In the first year, some students’ reading test score were improved and the heavier students’ weights were lost a lot.

I think most of the parents agree with that sugar should be eliminated from school, and at home they will not give junk food for their kids. We have taught our kids eating too much of sugar might be harmful to health, but sometimes we are bothered when a kid get home from school and tell us that he was good at school, so the teacher give him candies. Maybe this condition will also confuse the children that eating candies is nothing inappropriate. In my opinion, the kids can be given candies only in some situation, e.g. to see a doctor, since go to hospital is big stress for them. Giving candies is helpful for the kids to relax; it’s like an adult want to have a cup of wine when not in the mood.

We all know that eating is a habit, when the kids eating without worry is a dangerous habit. We should offer an environment that children could learn how to choose healthy food for themselves. (255 words)

According to What to Do When the Patient Says,‘please Don’t Tell Mom’, Perri Klass, a professor of journalism and pediatrics at New York University, had experienced that a middle-schooler told her in a private exam room that he had no friend in school, and that he was picked on sometimes by other kids in his school. Perri Klass was trying to talk to the student’s parents and let them talk to school, but the student asked this professor not to say any word to his parents and not to interfere. The consulting doctor had an ambivalent feeling toward this case-- keep their conversation as a privacy to earn the trust of the kid or give the information to the kid’s parents to protect the kid. Finally, she kept their dialogue as a secret because she thought“I was his doctor.”

The hot topic“Medical ethics”have been discussing in lots of hospitals these years, and the topic gives medical staffs some guidelines to follow--what to do and what to say when you encounter a medical moral judgment. I am not surprised at the pediatrician’s decision, but as a mother, I cannot understand why the consulting doctor doesn’t remind the parents that maybe the kid is in a dangerous situation. To tell or not to tell, I think it depend on the parents spiritual maturity. The professor should evaluate the parents’ ability first, and if they know that the parents can handle the problem, the professor could tell the parents what happened to their kid.

I think most of the doctors follow the principle of“Medical ethics”to protecting patients and themselves. In Taiwan, without the AIDS patient’s permission, the doctor cannot tell his wife that her husband has a severe contagious disease. If you are the wife of the AIDS patient, what do you think? According to We’re Going to Party Like It’s 1929 ,the distinctively 2008 feeling of holiday harshness was always lurking, and the condition reminds people the dark days of Great Depression in 1929. The host, Alex Williams, wanted to plan a party to rescue the holidays for his friends, so, he called Mr. Monn, the well-known New York event planner, to help him. In this article, the planner showed people that how to design great holiday dinner party for the host’s friends at his apartment on a recessionary budget.

The coming holidays, Christmas and Lunar New Year, some people plan that they will not give a present to their friends and some employers decide that they will not held a year-end party for their employees because of sour economy. I think people will not care too much about the presents or the menus, but the feeling. In this greeting season, people should do something to warm or to encourage each other. Send a Christmas card to a friend or have a potluck with colleagues can instead.

Last week, I had a dinner with my friends working with me in the hospital before. We share a lot--work, family, investments, etc. At first, some of us were depressed when we talked about that the market performance went down. After we knew most of us were the loser, we all give a sigh of relief and laugh a long, bitter laugh. At this time, having a dinner together our focus are friends and togetherness.(242 words)

According to Study: Spare tire doubles risk of dying even if BMI is OK, a new report, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, found that people with belly fat have a higher risk of dying than their same-weight peers without a spare tire, even if they’re at a healthy weight. The fat stacks in abdominal is a serious threat that it can pad the internal organs so that it is thought to increase inflammation by releasing hormones.

I think in the past years most of us only know that overweight is one of the risk factors of heart disease, diabetes, and some types of cancers. We do an exercise or have a diet control to keep ourselves away from the chronic diseases; our concern is the body weight or body mass index (BMI). After reading this report, first, I think everyone should check their own waist circumference and examine the datum if it is in the normal range. In this article, it was mentioned that men with the biggest girth 40.4 inches and women with 35 inches or lager will have a higher mortality risk. Secondly, if you have an abdominal fat, you have to do something to deal it. Some doctors suggest that “eat less and exercise more”are helpful to reducing the size of fat around the waistline. In my experience, I have tried to lesson my stomach fat by eating less and practicing yoga and Pilates after giving birth, and it did work. I think the style of activities is also an important factor. I sense that now my belly is bigger than before that I have a hard work and only have little time to sit down.

How to reduce the excess body weight or belly fat is always a hot topic for people, especially for women. Hence some people waste their money on expensive“fat burner”pills that don’t work or other bogus supplements. The Depatrment of Health should list more detail information on health eating and exercise which might help people to lose belly fat. (331 words)

According to the report Count orders detention of Taiwan ex-president, the ex-President, Chen shu-bian, whose presidential term ended in May mired in a corruption scandal. He was detained and led to court in handcuffs on November 11 after several hours of questioning by prosecutors. Mr. Chen has denied wrongdoing in the case and accused it is a politically motivated attack because President Ma Ying-jeou wants to move closer to Beijing. The media said the prosecutors are investigating the ex-President “over his alleged misuse of his discretionary ‘state affairs funds’ and a money–laundering case involving the former first family."

When Mr. Chen raised his arms, show his handcuffs to the media, and shouted “Political persecution! Long live Taiwan”, I was very upset because he made grave errors. Once supporters revered Chen shu-bian as the man who ended more than 50 years of KMT rule and push Taiwan toward independence, but they feel disappointed when he admitted that his wife had remitted the big money into overseas account held by relatives. At this time, Mr. Chen and his family members involving in the events should keep silence and face the law.

I think the detention of Chen shu-bian is nothing about political motivation. Everyone is treated fairly under the law, even an ex-President. This case will give an example that all officers of government should not debase themselves by such behavior.(220 words)

According to Staying Healthy in a Sick Economy, when the disaster strikes, demand for yoga goes up, and on-site gyms exert a special pull: “People come and they want someone to talk to-- it’s like Cheers,” noted Grace Desimono, a director of group fitness. In the bad economy--nearing collapse of the world markets, some fitness centers in the financial districts are offering shorter, cheaper personal training sessions for members who lose their job. For many good reasons, people are encouraged to do exercise in a sick economy.

I think it’s really a big impact-- some people lost their job and lots of college graduates cannot find a job because the sour economy. Sometimes, the unemployed suffer stress from relatives’ and neighbors’ over-concern. If they have something to get up and to go out as usual, the relatives and neighbors will not easy to find that they are jobless. At this time, going out for exercise regularly is helpful. The unemployed should spend more time in doing exercise because it can help them to keep in a healthy shape for the next opportunity. Besides the conceptions mentioned above, exercise is also one of the most important things that people can do as part of their anti-aging and anti-pressure regiments.

We don’t know that if the economic environment is going to get worse; however, people should do something to block the disappointment. Doing exercise is a good way to help people weather hard time, as long as it’s not just for health, but to network and stay positive. (257 words)

Student dies during steamed bun eating contest at university
My Reactions:
A graduate student at Dayeh University died while participating in an eating contest. After finishing two steamed buns stuffed with egg and cheese in a short period, the students could not stop vomiting and fell the unconscious. The student was performed CPR immediately by the school medical personnel and brought to hospital quickly. The doctors spent 90 minutes of resuscitation trying to revive him, without success. “The student may have choked to death”, said the doctor in the emergency ward of the hospital.

It was a tragic accident, as long as it should serve as a cautionary tale. Whenever I saw the ” Big Stomach King” who participated in the eating contest scoffing down hamburgers, hot dogs, pizzas, or whatever it is in a short time from TV, I switched the channel to prevent my kids to watch it. I think it was not only wasting food, but it was also harmful to the human body.

I think most kinds of eating contest should be banned because they may end in tragedy. In fact, there are lots of eating games still held, therefore, the games with limit that the aged and the children cannot allowed to attend is necessary. First aids for the contest have to get ready, too. We should take time to enjoy the food instead of scoffing down. (221 words)

Taiwanese tycoon Wang Yung-ching dies

My Reactions:
Taiwan lost a respected and influential figure Wang Yung-Ching on October 16. Wang , with a personal fortune of 60 billion U.S. dollars listed by Forbes as the world’s 178th richest man and the third richest in Taiwan, passed away in his sleep in New Jersey during a business tour to the United States. He founded the Formosa Plastics and eventually built Asia’s biggest petrochemical empire. He played an important role in Taiwan’s economic development.

Besides Wang Yung-Ching is known as the “God of Management” in Taiwan, his success in business is a story told in a positive way by people for few decades. I have heard about Wang Yung-Ching since I was an elementary student. I was impressed at his wealth and effort. At that time, when the kids asked their parents to buy something for them, the parents would say “I am not Wang Yung-Ching”. School teachers also mentioned to the students that how did Wang start his first business, a small rice store, when he was a teenager. People were encouraged at his success. Mr. Wang is not only a business man, but also a philanthropist. For example, he donated big money to the victims of the earthquake, constructed hospitals for patients, and built schools for students.

Wang Yung-Ching lived a long life, when he passed away at the age of 92. We might learn from him that how to keep healthy. I think a lot of Taiwanese remember that Mr. Wang went jogging in his company, the Formosa Plastics, sport almost every year when he was still alive.

Palin denies she abused power

My Reactions:
The chief investigator concluded that the Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin violated state ethics law and abused her power as governor by trying to have her former brother-in –low, Mike Wooten , fired as a state trooper. Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegans has said he lost his job because he refused to fire trooper Wooten, who involved in a bitter divorce and custody battle with Palin’s sister. Palin denied and said that there was nothing unlawful or unethical about replacing a cabinet member.

The former President Chen Shui-bian once remained a highly diverse figure for his position on Taiwan independence. After a legislator had announced that Chen wired money of contributor oversea, all of the DPP members and supporters were disappoint and felt like a fool. Most of the people will not trust him anymore no matter what he says. If it is true that Palin used her power as governor to get former brother-in –low fired because her family had feud with him prior to her becoming governor, she will lost the tickets of the electorate of the US.

People rely on elected officials not to use the power of their office to pursue personal benefit. A politician with higher moral standard is required. (206 words)

Economy Creates Surge in Homelessness
My Reactions:
The number of homeless families in Massachusetts has been increasing quickly and massively since last year because of the sour economy, rising energy cost, escalating unemployment and shortage of affordable hosing. The state’s shelter capacity is not sufficient for the homeless families and therefore they will be placed in motels. To help the families move into permanently home quickly, the expert said the state should focus on creating more housing vouchers.

There are more and more families will loss their house because the economic crisis that began in the United States will affect everyone, everywhere in the world .It is really a huge impact. People without a settle home will lead to social problems, especially for the kids. If the children cannot go to school and receive the education regularly, when they grow up, it is difficult for them to get away from poverty and they might have mental health issues, e.g. lack of confidence. Since many parents cannot able to care for their children’s emotion needs during these hard times, the government should supply some policies for them. Providing a shelter for temporary living is very important, because it can keep family together and keep the kids in school. It is also necessary that the school teachers should give mental support for the homeless kids.

Economic downturn has become a worldwide problem, therefore, improving the economic condition is the first priority for most of the authorities. I think we should stay in a simple life before the condition changed.

How some women never get sick

My Reactions:

It was said in the article: If you wanted to be one of those women who never get sick, you may try one or all of these following seven secrets:
1. Get a massage
2. Take a cold shower
3. Treat GI problems “gingerly”
4. Lather up (a lot)
5. Try a cold-blasting cocktail
6. Eat more garlic
7. Stay positive

I agree with the theories mentioned above. When I was an undergraduate student, I learned from my teacher that if you want to have a health life, you have to have a good life style. I have been working as a technologist in Veterans General Hospital of Taichung for fifteen years. When I face the inpatients, who suffer from different disease, I always remind myself –do not get sick. I try to apply some rules in my daily life, e.g. cook food with garlic or ginger and in a good mood, etc. I experienced that if I relax myself, there is no constipation, no skin rash for me.

I was married to my husband when I was age 32 and two years later I had my first kid. How to keep the health of body is what I care about. In my opinion, making a positive thinking is the most important factor for someone who refuses to be sick. I suggest that both doing exercise and having a good sleep are also essential for keeping away from disease. (244 words)
